The Artists Behind Kosta Boda
Artists and designers have always been at the heart of Kosta Boda. From the introduction of the glassworks’ first dedicated designer in 1898 to the internationally recognised artists working with the brand today, creative collaboration has helped shape Kosta Boda’s distinctive identity.
Among the most influential names associated with Kosta Boda are Göran Wärff and Bertil Vallien, whose very different approaches demonstrate the extraordinary range of Swedish glass design.

Göran Wärff
Göran Wärff (1933–2022) was both a designer and artist whose work was deeply influenced by nature, light and the changing colours and forms of the sea. He regarded glass almost as a liquid material, exploring its ability to take on different shapes and interact with light.
Wärff first joined Kosta Boda in the mid-1960s and returned to work there full-time in 1986 after several years living and working in Australia and the United Kingdom. His varied body of work included both functional glassware and major design commissions, while his Kosta Boda collections include celebrated designs such as Limelight, Mirage, Orchid and Saraband.
His work is particularly notable for its sensitivity to colour, light and the tactile qualities of glass, resulting in pieces that can change character as they interact with their surroundings.

Bertil Vallien
Bertil Vallien, born in 1938, is one of Sweden’s most celebrated designers and glass artists. He joined Kosta Boda in 1963 and has since developed an extensive body of work spanning functional glassware, sculptural pieces and highly distinctive Art Glass.
Vallien draws inspiration from sketching, functionality and the qualities of glass itself. His approach combines artistic expression with a strong appreciation for craftsmanship, with many of his designs exploring the relationship between the object, its materials and the person using it.
His work for Kosta Boda includes renowned collections such as Picnic and Château. Château is particularly notable for its refined, thin glass and optical detailing, with the collection developed around techniques that could not simply be replicated by machines.
Vallien is also renowned for his sculptural Art Glass, with his work earning international recognition and numerous awards throughout his career.

The Heritage of Kosta Boda
Kosta Boda’s story begins in the forests of Småland, Sweden, where Kosta glassworks was founded in 1742. The location provided access to the timber needed to fuel the furnaces, while its position allowed the glassworks to supply both Stockholm and Karlskrona. Today, Kosta is recognised as the oldest active glassworks in Sweden, with its furnaces having been lit since 26 July 1742.
The Kosta Boda brand as it exists today was formed through the merger of the Kosta, Boda and Åfors glassworks. Over the centuries, glassmaking at Kosta developed from the production of fine traditional glassware into a distinctive Swedish design tradition, with artists and designers becoming central to the identity of the brand.
This focus on artistic collaboration became particularly important from the late 19th century onwards. Kosta began employing its own designers to establish a distinctive design profile, a tradition that continues today. Generations of artists have since pushed the possibilities of glass, combining skilled craftsmanship with experimentation, colour, form and artistic expression.
Kosta Boda Art Glass for Collectors
Kosta Boda has produced generations of distinctive Art Glass, making the brand particularly appealing to collectors of Scandinavian design and contemporary glass.
The collection encompasses artist-designed pieces, limited editions, unique works and distinctive designs that showcase different approaches to colour, form and technique. Individual pieces can offer a connection to a particular artist, collection or period in Kosta Boda’s history, making them as interesting to display and collect as they are to admire as examples of Swedish craftsmanship.
For collectors, the appeal of Kosta Boda lies in this combination of artistic expression, craftsmanship and heritage. A carefully selected piece can become a distinctive addition to an established collection or a starting point for discovering the wider world of Swedish Art Glass.

Caring for Your Kosta Boda Glass
With the right care, Kosta Boda glassware can be enjoyed for many years. Kosta Boda categorises its glassware as dishwasher safe, machine wash with care, or hand wash only, as certain colours and decorative details require more delicate treatment. Always check the care information supplied with your individual piece before washing.
Dishwasher Care
Where dishwasher use is permitted, Kosta Boda recommends using a gentle or eco-friendly programme at approximately 50°C and avoiding unnecessarily long or hot cycles. Do not overload the dishwasher, and make sure glasses cannot knock against one another, as this can cause chips around the rim.
Use the recommended amount of detergent rather than overdosing, as excessive detergent can contribute to problems with the surface of the glass.
Hand Washing & Storage
Some Kosta Boda glassware should only be washed by hand, particularly pieces with special colours or decorative details. Older glassware, especially lead crystal, should not be washed in a dishwasher.
Avoid stacking glasses, as glass rubbing against glass can create scratches. When storing glasses, avoid leaving them upside down where trapped moisture could remain against the glass surface.
Caring for Glass Vases, Bowls & Decorative Pieces
For larger decorative glass pieces, use a soft cloth and mild cleaning solution where appropriate, avoiding abrasive materials that could scratch the surface. Handle larger or sculptural pieces with both hands and place them on stable surfaces away from edges where they could be knocked.
For individual products, always follow the specific care instructions supplied with the piece.
